How to Protect Your Cats & Dogs From Extreme Summer Heat in Pakistan
Actionable strategies to prevent heatstroke, dehydration, and tick infestations in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and other Pakistani cities during scorching summer months.

Recognizing Heatstroke Symptoms in Pakistani Summers

With summer temperatures regularly soaring past 40°C in cities across Punjab and Sindh, domestic pets—especially long-haired Persians, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and brachycephalic breeds like Pugs—are susceptible to life-threatening heat exhaustion.

Dogs and cats cannot sweat through their skin the way humans do; they primarily regulate internal heat through panting and heat exchange through their paw pads.

Key Preventative Measures

- Walk Only During Cooler Hours: Restrict outdoor dog walks to before 7:00 AM or after 8:30 PM. Asphalt road surfaces can easily reach 60°C in the sun, burning paw pads severely.

- Multiple Fresh Water Stations: Keep cool water bowls throughout the house. Add an ice cube during mid-afternoon peak temperatures.

- Never Shave Double-Coated Dogs: Breeds like German Shepherds, Huskies, and Golden Retrievers have double coats that provide thermal insulation against both heat and UV radiation. Shaving can cause sunburn and disrupt coat regrowth. Instead, use a slicker brush to remove the dead insulating undercoat.
